In 1995 I wrote an article called "Movies, Anyone?" for "Dialogue," a magazine for and by blind and visually impaired people. My intent was to get as many blind and visually impaired people to realize that going to the movies is a realistic option for an enjoyable afternoon or evening out. The response to the article was good, so I decided to start doing movie reviews and rating them, based on my ability to follow the picture with the aid of a sighted assistant. I've been publishing the movie reviews locally in my home town and in Dialogue and, again the response has been excellent. So, I decided to put it out on the net for all blind and visually impaired computer users.
I rate movies on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being a movie that is next to impossible to follow, even with the best sighted assistant, and 10 being a movie that a blind person could follow and enjoy without any assistance from someone with sight. Usually any rating from 6 and higher will be workable with a sighted assistant.
The movie reviews on this home page will not make judgments about profanity, violence or sexuality. Our sole concern is to inform viewers about the ease or difficulty that visually impaired people will experience while following the story.
I will be continually reviewing movies that are currently running in theaters. If you are interested in responding to me for any reason, please feel free to do so. Any questions, comments or feedback on the accuracy of ratings for movies will be appreciated.
