Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People
"Anna and The King," rated PG 13 and with a running time of two and one half hours is a well done, new version of the famous "King and I."
Jody Foster stars as Anna, a teacher from England who comes to Siam to help tutor the king's oldest son. She discovers that the customs and culture are very different from her home, but perseveres as teacher due to her love of the children. The King, played by Chow Yun-Phat, wants his children to learn English, but is initially outraged by this foreign woman who refuses to kneel in his presence and acts in ways that are completely unacceptable to him.
They slowly begin to develop a respect for one another as life in the palace becomes more and more challenging.
From the visually impaired point of view. This movie started out with a little narrative which was pleasing. My hopes for a relaxing evening faded quickly though. All the people except Anna and her son, Louie, had Asian accents which often made it difficult to understand. To complicate matters there were many scenes with sub-titles as the native language was being spoken. We all know what happens to visually impaired people who go to pictures with sub-titles. I needed running descriptions of many scenes that had no dialogue at all as well as having my sighted assistant continually read the English sub-titles. Very tough. Throw in a few battle scenes and you have a very difficult movie to enjoy.
It's too bad because the story is a good one. The scenes were well done, the exotic culture was portrayed excellently and the music added to the feel of being in another country. Oh well. If you choose to visit this movie at a theater, just remember I warned you. I can only give this film a 3.
