Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People
"Runaway Bride," rated PG 13 and with a running time of about two hours is a romantic comedy about love, marriage and finding the real person within.
Ike Graham, played by Richard Gere, is a columnist for a big city newspaper. He writes a less than accurate story about a woman from a small town, Maggie, Julia Roberts, and her inability to go through with marriage plans. Soon after the article is published Ike is fired for jeopardizing the integrity of the newspaper with an inaccurate story. Turns out that Maggie wrote to Ike's boss and her letter got him fired. Ike decides to seek Maggie out, initially to redeem himself and his job, but things don't turn out exactly as he had planned.
From the visually impaired point of view. This movie started out with lots of abrupt scene changes in the first twenty minutes along with a bunch of jumping around that made things hard to follow. After awhile, however, things settled down and were much more acceptable. At least one of the two main characters seemed to always be in every scene. Their voices were distinct and easy to follow. There were many minor characters coming in and out, which occasionally posed challenges, but the focus of the movie remained consistent throughout. There were three long scenes that were just visual with music. These obviously needed descriptions. There were many spots when the audience inexplicably laughed, causing me to immediately turn to my sighted assistant to find out why. This was frustrating but not devastating. In spite of the difficulties this movie was relatively easy to follow. The constant dialogue always kept you in the story. I'll give this one a 7 and encourage you to check it out.
