A Phone Call Away

Written driving south away from home (again). Too bad pay phones went up to a quarter...

Pay phone:
Wonder who used it last
And who they called?
They left so fast they forgot their change.
Dial tone:
Sounds like a friend to me
And I start to smile.
You'd laugh to see me look so strange.

How can I take you for granted
When I'm leaving you all the time?
How can you doubt my feelings
When I'm laying it on the line?
How can you think I don't love you
When I tell you every day?
Don't think about the distance--
I'm just a phone call away.

At home:
There is no answer yet,
Just empty rings.
I lost my bet to catch your ear.
Time zone:
I think my watch is wrong.
Cost me my dime,
I just wanted to say,
"wish I was there..."

How can I take you for granted
When I'm leaving you all the time?
How can you doubt my feelings
When I'm laying it on the line?
How can you think I don't love you
When I tell you every day?
Don't think about the distance--
I'm just a phone call away.
