That Awful Diana Krall
The following is an email sent to KLON, a jazz broadcaster
in Long Beach, California:
Date: August 16, 2000
Subject: That awful Diana Krall
Hi there,
I'm an occasional listener via C-band satellite. Once again this
morning there was a piece on by Diana Krall, and, as usual, I hit
the Mute button.
The legitimate jazz world's embrace of this performer continues to
mystify me. Maybe it's that she does the Blonde Goddess act. Or
maybe it's just that, in the female-jazz-singer desert that exists
since Ella faded from the scene, it's like any crust of bread looks
like mannah to a starving man. But this piece of white bread has No
Nutritional Content. Nobody's home. All merengue and no pie. In
any case it pains me to see even an outfit with the credentials of
KLON swaying like a bird to a snake's hypnotic gaze when this woman's
name comes up.
Oh, well, that's my two cents worth. Call me an old curmudgeon if
you like, but I listened and listened and heard only echoes...
Thanks,
